A lesson from history; links matter!
In the beginning, 1995 BG (Before Google), it was imperative to get links to your website. When launching a website, the first thing we did was to submit the site to Yahoo! and then try like heck to get other backlinks.
That was years before anyone ever heard about SEO or Google; the purpose was to create new paths to the website. If you could get a link from a high-traffic website, you could get clicks to your website. It made a lot of sense back then and it makes even more sense today.
Some things don’t change
Everything you’ve heard about search engine optimization and social media marketing have merit and will contribute to how well you website ranks in search results. The one marketing tactic that has not changed in twenty years is the need for strong quality links.
Not only are links still important, in many cases they are the most important part of your website marketing strategy. Search engines know that most queries are for local information and they will display local results first. What you may not know is how the search engines determine which local results they will show.
All major search engines use “local links” (and other factors) to determine the value of a website. In other words, the sites with strong local authority links tend to rank better in search results. This was one of the driving factors behind the creation of the Flathead Guide; to create a strong local authority site that would benefit local businesses.

I was not aware that links had any actual value for anything except linking to some other page. Very interesting, thanks.
